Biratu Shows His Potential

Fitzsimmons Racing continued its winning start to the week on Tuesday, with talented four-year-old Biratu producing a determined performance to claim the 1887m bet365 Same Race Multi BM62 Handicap at Kyneton.

The son of Maurice, ridden by Luke Currie, settled into a comfortable rhythm before working his way through the field and finishing strongly to defeat Lunar Force by 0.15 lengths, with Mike's Hope finishing third.

The victory was Biratu's second career success and an encouraging result for a horse trainer Tim Fitzsimmons believes has considerable improvement ahead of him.

"He was fantastic. I think he'll learn a lot from that," Fitzsimmons said.

"He needed a run where he wasn't exposed so early. He went through horses nicely, Luke gave him a perfect ride, and it's a great result.

"He's been a frustrating horse, but I think he's got a ton of ability, and he'll just keep getting better."

Biratu has shown ability throughout his career but has also tested the patience of his connections as he continues to mature and learn his craft.

Currie, who produced a patient ride to secure the victory, explained that getting the gelding to relax was the key to his performance.

"Tim was saying that he can be a little bit cautious, and he was a bit like that, so you can see why the blinkers have gone on him," Currie said.

"Today, I just got him to relax. He raced lovely. The gaps were sort of rolling around in front of him, and he was a bit hesitant to go, but when he got through, he got brave and he was quite good."

Despite securing his second career victory, Currie believes Biratu remains very much a work in progress.

"He's a beautiful big horse, but he's just a big baby," Currie said.

Fitzsimmons agreed, highlighting how far the gelding has progressed since his early days in the stable.

"Early days, he wouldn't go in the barriers, so he's come a long way," he said.

The trainer also acknowledged the patience and ongoing support of Biratu's ownership group, including Vic Elvin and Cameron Cook.

"We've got a really, really good bunch of owners in this horse. They're patient, and hopefully he can go on with it now."

With his confidence continuing to grow and further physical and mental development expected, Biratu shapes as an exciting prospect for the stable moving forward.

The victory also completed a successful two days for Fitzsimmons Racing, following Daynes Dahwun's maiden breakthrough at Echuca on Monday.

Congratulations to Biratu's connections, Luke Currie and the entire Fitzsimmons Racing team on another pleasing result.
