Daynes Dahwun Breaks Through at Echuca

Fitzsimmons Racing celebrated a well-deserved victory at Echuca on Monday, with promising three-year-old Daynes Dahwun breaking through for his maiden win following an injury-interrupted preparation.
The son of Microphone claimed the 1000m Moama Bowling Club 3YO Maiden Plate under jockey Mitchell Aitken, making the most of his early speed to lead throughout and hold off the fast finishing Magnsaurus.
The victory was a rewarding result for the Bendigo-based stable, with Daynes Dahwun having shown plenty of promise in his previous starts before requiring surgery to remove bone chips from both knees.
Trainer Tim Fitzsimmons was delighted with the gelding's return to racing.
"We obviously had a bit of a hiccup in the first prep. He had a couple of chips taken out of both knees," Fitzsimmons said.
"His trials have been really good. He's definitely not screwed down for this race today."
Fitzsimmons revealed that the race tactics had been discussed with Aitken beforehand, with the stable keen to make use of the gelding's natural early speed.
"I said to Mitch, we did think that there was a lot of speed in the race and he may get crossed. But I said, just make sure that you make them earn it if they're going to cross you.
"I think holding the lead was the winning factor."
Aitken was equally pleased with the improvement shown by Daynes Dahwun, particularly compared to his previous preparation.
"Last preparation, he just wasn't there mentally," Aitken said.
"Today, he just did everything right. He jumped, travelled and presented well. When I asked for that effort, he just kept on improving."
Having twice finished runner-up at Echuca earlier in his career, it was fitting that Daynes Dahwun secured his maiden victory at the same venue.
The result was also particularly satisfying for the horse's connections, with Fitzsimmons acknowledging the support of owner Rick McIntosh, who was among the first to back the trainer upon his return to Australia.
"Great bunch of owners. Great to get a winner for Rick. First horse he gave me when I arrived back, and I really appreciate it," Fitzsimmons said.
"Just great to get a result for everybody."
With his maiden victory now secured and further improvement expected, Daynes Dahwun looks well placed to build on his encouraging return to racing.
Congratulations to all connections and the Fitzsimmons Racing team on a terrific result.
